This fall P.S.1 presents 2822 Records (PS1), 1987-2009, a site-specific floor-based installation of vinyl records by Christian Marclay.

Consisting entirely of 12-inch records of every musical genre and style, Marclay’s installation highlights the experiential qualities of music and vinyl recording by inviting visitors to walk on the artwork. Marclay’s installation highlights some of the most primal notions around music, namely volume, space, and physicality. As an example of viewer and audience participation, it highlights a seminal aspect of the upcoming exhibition 100 Years (version #1, ps1, nov 2009), drafting a short history of actions, events, situations, happenings, and performances beginning with the Futurist Manifesto in 1909 until the present.

L’installation inédite qu’il a créée pour MONUMENTA 2010 est conçue comme une expérience frappante, à la fois physique et psychologique, un moment d’émotion spectaculaire qui questionne la nature et le sens de l’humanité. Investissant l’ensemble de la grande nef, il crée un lieu de commémoration visuel et sonore d'une densité exceptionnelle. L'œuvre engage une réflexion sociale, religieuse et humaine sur la vie, la mémoire, la singularité irréductible de chaque existence, mais aussi la présence de la mort, la déshumanisation des corps, le hasard de la destinée. A cette installation il donne le nom évocateur de Personnes.

Œuvre visuelle, mais aussi sonore, l’installation inédite réalisée pour le Grand Palais aborde un thème nouveau pour l’artiste, qui poursuit sa réflexion sur les limites de l’humanité et la dimension essentielle du souvenir : la question du destin et de l’inéluctabilité de la mort. Conçue comme une œuvre unique, qui transforme l’ensemble du bâtiment par la création d’une ambiance particulièrement émouvante, l’installation s’offre au visiteur comme un gigantesque tableau animé. L’œuvre Personnes est une création à caractère éphémère. Selon la volonté de l’artiste, les éléments qui la constituent seront recyclés à l’issue de l’exposition.
