Papier mache: In 1965, de Saint Phalle began creating her "Nanas" ---large, voluptuous , colorful female figures that were made originally in papier mâché . But she then switched to polyester. An unfortunate choice since the use of this material led to an infection of her lungs and, eventually, her death.
